Cohors Cthulhu is a complete tabletop roleplaying game of Lovecraftian horror placed against a backdrop of epic heroism, intrigue, and strife during the height of the early Roman Empire.  

Amid a war-torn and fractious world in which Roman legionaries bent on conquest face off against barbarian warriors protecting their tribes, players take on the roles of diverse heroes from regions across the empire: Aegyptus, Assyria, Britannia, Gaul, Germania, Hispania, and even eternal Rome itself. Arising from a wide array of backgrounds, they battle baleful horrors facing humanity. 

You are fighting a hidden war on the fringes of the Roman Empire. Far up on the northern border, Romans and Germanic tribes clash in the dark and forbidden forests that cover these lands. Soon, however, you’ll have to band together to stem the invading forces of an insidious cult and its swarm of abhorrent creatures from the deep cosmos.

This fight also requires the remnants of forgotten magic preserved by priests of jealous and competing gods. Fickle as humanity’s gods may be, they are sometimes the only recourse against those from beyond the stars. Nyarlathotep, the God of a Thousand Forms, has unleashed myriad schemes across Rome, Germania, and beyond. In the shadows lurk powerful, corrupted survivors of Atlantis, their minds twisted by Sarthothus, the Shattered God. Deep Ones demand sacrifices from coastal villages and conduct raids along the waterways. The Mi-Go have sent expeditions into the mountains to plunder Earth’s resources and perform horrific experiments on its peoples. Nightmarish creatures and ancient beings of incalculable power stalk the periphery of civilization, seeking living things upon which to feast… or worse.

There is a reason why humanity is coveted by entities that can swallow entire stars: their limitless potential threatens even the gods. It falls to your heroes to achieve that potential. The stories of this era will take their place among humanity’s most epic tales. What part will your heroes play in them?

We'll be releasing the Cohors Cthulhu tabletop roleplaying line in retail next summer, but with your help, we can add extra content to both core books and the Germania Adventures book, which would otherwise be delivered in a future supplement to keep costs down. We also want to unlock more STL 3D printable miniatures of player characters and a set of PDF adventures by guest writers set around the frontier town of Laurium.

The 2d20 system is a dynamic, cinematic RPG rules set, designed for dramatic and action-packed situations. Characters roll two d20s, attempting to roll as low as possible on each one – the more dice that roll low, the more successes the character scores.

Tests require one or more successes to be successful, and any successes scored in excess of that become Momentum, which can be spent to achieve a variety of advantageous effects. Players who wish to succeed at higher difficulties can push their luck; using Momentum to roll extra d20s to boost their chances of success or adding to a pool of Threat that represents all the things that can go wrong in an adventure. The GM can spend this Threat to complicate adventures and scenarios and make the characters’ lives more challenging.

Founded by Chris and Rita Birch in 2013, Modiphius Entertainment is a UK-based global tabletop gaming publisher of award-winning roleplaying games (Achtung! Cthulhu, Star Trek Adventures and Dune: Adventures in the Imperium), miniatures games (The Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms and Fallout: Wasteland Warfare) and board games (Spectre: The Board Game, Agatha Christie's Death on the Cards and Matt Leacock's Thunderbirds). After the success of Achtung! Cthulhu, a new era begins. Players face Eldritch horrors in Lovecraftian 2nd century Rome, where the ancient forces of the Mythos collide. Chris and Rita have also championed efforts for frontline aid efforts in Ukraine by starting Roll vs Evil, a non-profit initiative where folks across the gaming industry play together to raise money for aid and equipment, and have raised close to £100,000 so far.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

You may request a refund within 30 days of the end of the crowdfunding campaign, if you do, you will receive a full refund. Please note if you used a foreign currency to pay, the refund amount may be affected by the current exchange rate.

If you request a refund after 30 days from the end of the Gamefound campaign, or 30 days after paying as a late backer in the pledge manager, there is a 10% fee deducted from the refund to cover costs which we do not get refunded.

If we have started the reward fulfilment process in your regional warehouse, then no refunds can be issued.
